ΩJr. Failure Notes

actie.detelefoongids.nl - ΩJr. Failure Notes

This information lives on a webpage hosted at the following web address: 'https://omegajunior.globat.com/failurenotes/'.

Upon finding an advertisement for http://actie.detelefoongids.nl/, we thought maybe the people from De Telefoongids were holding a raffle. We were wrong. Though the Dutch public can find telephone numbers at the web site http://www.detelefoongids.nl/, the sub domain 'actie' points to a server owned by a completely different party.

De Telefoongids

The Dutch phone directory is available on-line at the web address www.detelefoongids.nl. Its IP address reads 81.93.174.82. At this web site, people can find phone numbers based on addresses of other people and companies.

The company that owns this site is called "De Telefoongids & Gouden Gids". It used to be part of the Royal Dutch Post ("KPN": www.kpn.nl), before it split off in the year 2003. De Telefoongids & Gouden Gids also publishes their phone directory as a physical phone book, which comes in handy when the internet disappears. Phone books have been published in the Netherlands since 1881. They also publish the Yellow Pages (that's the Gouden Gids part).

Action at De Telefoongids

The other web address, actie.detelefoongids.nl, does refer to a web site with special offers (which is one of the definitions of the word "actie" in Dutch), but the site doesn't look anything like the phone directory...

Plenty of things at that site call for dedication of a Failure Note...

Of course it doesn't look like the phone directory. The site at IP address 213.136.31.201, is owned by a different company, which is known as "First Impressions". They have a web site at a similar sounding web address, which looks surprisingly like the one above: www.first-impressions.nl (same IP address).

The First Impressions web site uses direct marketing to gauge customer experiences and desires and increase their clients' sales. It seems a subsidiary of the "Scoot Media" company, a direct marketing business in the Netherlands.

The Fail

Somehow someone managed to register www.detelefoongids.nl, but apparently failed to register the entire *.detelefoongids.nl. How is this possible? Imagine you being able to register you-own-app.microsoft.com, without Microsoft able to claim ownership!

Erm, no. actie.detelefoongids.nl is also owned by De Telefoongids. And by Scoot Media. Both.

How?

Well, as the Scoot Media web site tells us, Scoot Media has been part of De Telefoongids BV since 2008.

So no, the fail isn't that one sub domain is owned by one company, while the other sub domain is owned by a different company.

Instead, the fail is that they're owned by the same company, have the same main domain, but absolutely nothing else in common. From the sound of it, "actie.detelefoongids.nl" appears a special offer for "www.detelefoongids.nl". Instead, it's something completely different.
