You will know the 3-cards monte effect, which is used by street hustlers to scam onlookers out of their money. It's a great effect in a card magician's arsenal.
It takes 3 playing cards: 2 red ones and 1 black (or the other way around), where the 1 odd card typically is a queen of spades. The scammer shows and lets the contestants inspect the cards. Then he lays the cards down on a table, in a row, and asks the contestants to bet on that card, of which they believe that it is the one black card.
Of course, the contestants rarely win.
This instruction will not tell you how to perform that effect. I believe it is readily available if you are willing to look for it. Instead, my version only appears to engage participants in a monte game. In actuality, I am performing the classic rings effect.
In the classic rings effect, what seem to be 3 solid steel, chromed rings, magically penetrate each other, at the whim of the magician. That is exactly what is happening in the Linked Cards Monte.
I first saw this effect performed by John Lenahan, whilst hosting the BBC television show "Stuff the White Rabbit", about 20 years ago. He didn't use the monte patter for this trick. Instead, he focused on card shark ruses. For him, that works just fine. As I intend to perform this particular effect in the streets, I chose to employ a patter used with another street magic trick.

I do not know whether the method described is the same one as used by John Lenahan. I have yet to ask him. My instruction is based upon the performances I have watched, reconstructing the appearance of the effect itself. It is possible mr. Lenahan used other methods.
